Chamber of Commerce Seeks Nuanced Traffic Solutions

This Tuesday, the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce completed a series of lectures called “Grid Un-Locked” focused on how to improve traffic in Sarasota. The conclusion that the Chamber reached is that the most practical way to relieve traffic in Sarasota is not with a single monolithic project like widening roads or building a rail system, but rather a combination of many individual solutions collaborated on together by the government, developers, businesses, and citizens. Some ideas include filling in the street grid more, building a second bridge to Longboat Key, installing 24-hour live intersection webcams that allow drivers to better plan their routes, and making the city more accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists. By pursuing many different small-to-large traffic solutions instead of just one massive solution, the city will grow more flexible in providing many different options for how traffic can be distributed as traffic patterns fluctuate significantly throughout the year.
